Although I have always been aware of the luxury designers and the amazing haute couture dresses that their workers slave away for hours to create, I was never truly sure of what it took to buy or wear one of these dresses. To gain more knowledge into this mysteriously magnificent lifestyle, I watched a BBC documentary, 'The secret world of haute couture".
This 45 minute documentary was completely breathtaking, from design to creation, these designer dresses never failed to impress. But it wasn't just these outstanding fashion pieces which stood out for me, but the women who were buying them. When watching the beginning of the documentary, I thought quite low of the women who were involved in this secret haute couture club. These rich women had been invited into the club by some of the biggest designers around the world such as Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent and Chanel, and at first I thought that they were all very spoilt, wasting their money on clothing items they would never wear, just because they could afford to. No matter how beautiful these designer gowns were, I could never really justify how these ladies could spend hundreds of thousands of pounds each year, just to hang on their wardrobe; but this documentary definitely changed my opinion.

These women are some of the most glamorous people on the globe, who travel to shows around the world in order to catch a couture piece they can keep to wear to important functions or just to add to their collection. The documentary really helped me empathise with these ladies and took an in deep look at their passion for these extraordinary pieces. But these women don't just see these items as clothing, but as artwork. This word 'art' really got me thinking. Why had I always been so opinionated about these women previously, when many other people spend the same amount (if not more!) on paintings and sculptures just to add decoration to their homes? Why are these women any different? It completely changed my whole perspective on the whole haute couture world!
| Chanel haute couture spring 2006 |
These fashion pieces really are works of art, and they deserve to be bought by people who will wear them and love them, just like any other pieces of clothing. And of course, these glamorous frocks are going to be more expensive than ready-to-wear luxury brands due to the promise of uniqueness; nobody else in the continent is going to have the same dress as you! It's amazing to watch these unbelievable sketches turn into elegant pieces of art, and I can now understand these women's love for this world. My favourite dress from the documentary was definitely the Chanel haute couture dress from spring 2006, which was completely created from feathers. This piece floated down the catwalk and the stitching and effort which had gone into creating it was outrageous, really making me appreciate this haute couture lifestyle and the creators even more.
The documentary gave me such a unique insight into this world which I had never really wanted to be involved with before. But now, I would do anything to wear one of these amazing dresses! These women live in the ultimate fashion dream world, and I'm just waiting for my invitation to be a part of it any day soon...
